The solar clock

As we said, the time is difficult concept for children, that is why, we have to use different ways to understand the time, it will be easier for them. One funny and old way to know the time, is the solar clock. The solar clock is an instrument used in very old times with the purpose of measuring the endure of the hours, minutes and seconds (the endure of the time). It uses the shadow of an long piece on the surface to indicate the position of the sun during the day movement and, therefore, the time. This long piece is called "gnomon".

How to use the solar clock with children:

HUMAN SOLAR CLOCK

One example that we can put into practice, is a human solar clock in which the gnomon is a person that is on the middle of the solar clock. The own shadow of the person, shows the time. This type of solar clock can be painted on the floor of the playground of a school and they can experiment and see the similarity with a normal clock. They can also make an investigation to explain how the solar clock works, by their own experience.

DO IT YOURSELF

They can also create their own solar clock by using easier types of solar clock like the vertical one. There is a very interesting webpage in which you can create your solar clock depending the part of the world in where you are. This webpage produce a vertical solar clock to print to put on the wall if you put your city, town or your address, and also the latitud and longitude. By this example, they can also repeat a solar clock made by them.
